How It Started

The Cape31 UK Story

What was built in the UK during COVID lockdown became one of the fastest-growing racing fleets in British sailing — a South African design brought home to the Solent, which proceeded to win everything it entered.

The Beginning

Mike and Dave Bartholomew witnessed the Cape31 fleet in South Africa and shipped Tokoloshe III to the Solent in a container. As she started winning IRC races, Dave Swete — Volvo Ocean Race veteran and World Match Racing Champion — fell in love with the boat in October 2020 and decided to build a UK class around it. Together with Dave Bartholomew and Suzy Peters, they set up 31 North Yachting and the UK Class Association.

The Growth

Built during COVID lockdown, the UK fleet went from one boat to the largest high-performance one-design class Cowes Week had seen since the Mumm 30 days. Boats arrived monthly. Teams from the Netherlands and Ireland joined. The class became the heartbeat of Solent racing — with a strong social scene, strict one-design rules and the right kind of competitive atmosphere.

The Expansion

Success bred expansion. UK boats began shipping to the Mediterranean in winter, attracted by the growing Med Circuit. This is a sign of class health, not decline — when your boat fits in a container, the world is your regatta. Some teams now race UK in summer, Med in winter. The UK circuit remains the spiritual home, with more infrastructure and venue partnerships than any other region.

The Opportunity

In 2026, the UK fleet is at an exciting inflection point. The infrastructure is built, the circuit is set, the venues are secured. New owners join a ready-made class — not a startup. Flying Jenny won the Britannia Cup at Cowes Week and back-to-back National Championships. Ben Pritchard went from never having sailed to leading the circuit in his third season. The C31 rewards talent and commitment at every level.

2026 UK Race Circuit Director & Class Founder
“We're all about matching the fun on the water with fun off the water — and we've taken it back to the yacht clubs. You can get this boat straight out of the box and go and win races. It's about the reward and satisfaction of racing at the highest level — and making sure every owner in the fleet gets to experience that.”
Dave Swete — Founder, Cape31 UK & 31 North Yachting
Six Reasons to Join

Why Cape31 UK

01

Wins Straight Out of the Box

Flying Jenny won the Britannia Cup at Cowes Week beating 23 higher-rated IRC yachts. Ben Pritchard had never sailed before his first Cape31 season and led the UK circuit in his third. The boat does what it says on the tin.

02

Not an Arms Race

Strict one-design. All hulls, rigs and appendages unmodified. Max three professional sailors. Owner-driver class. Racing is decided by crew skill and tactics — not budget. Class committee actively polices this ethos.

03

Ready-Made Race Circuit

Six rounds, seven yacht clubs, a National Championship. RYS, RSYC, Poole YC, Cowes Week, Royal Thames — the infrastructure is built. You join a mature, well-run programme, not a startup.

04

Fits in a Container

C31 and 2-piece mast fit a standard 40ft container. Race UK in summer. Ship to the Mediterranean for winter. Or to Cape Town. Or the Caribbean. Several UK teams already race both circuits in the same year.

05

A World Champion In Your Corner

The circuit is run by a two-time Volvo Ocean Race sailor and World Match Racing Champion who brings the same attention to detail from professional offshore racing to every event. BBQs at the Royal Yacht Squadron. Prize givings that go late. A world-class experience at club level.

06

Global Class

80+ boats across 7 regions, 13 nations. Cape31 wins at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, UK IRC Nationals, Cowes Week, and the Rolex Big Boat Series. Your UK boat is internationally competitive the moment it arrives.

Building the Class

How the UK
Fleet Was Built

Mike Bartholomew brought the UK’s first Cape31 to Cowes — Tokoloshe. His son Dave Bartholomew, known throughout the class as Bart, raced with him alongside Dave Swete, who was putting the boat through its paces in IRC 1 from the very start.

Then Mike did something that defined the spirit of the UK class: he sold Tokoloshe to Russell Peters to give the one-design fleet the numbers it needed to race. Russell renamed her Squirt. Mike immediately ordered a new build from Cape Town — the new Tokoloshe — which arrived later that same year. Katabatic (Lance Adams), Jiraffe (Simon Perry) and Gallivanter joined to complete the founding fleet. These boats raced and won under IRC and ORC before the flood of new builds arrived. The strategy was deliberate: win first, prove the boat, build the fleet around the results. Bart now runs a number of boats for owners across both the UK and Med fleets.

The new build — Katabatic K2 — arrived from Cape Town in early 2023. The programme continued. The results got considerably better.

The Strategy

Win under IRC and ORC first. Prove the boat to the sceptics. Let the results speak. Build the one-design fleet around that proof.

The Founding Act

Mike Bartholomew sold his own boat to Russell Peters to seed the one-design fleet — then ordered a new build from Cape Town. That’s how you build a class.

The Results That
Built a Fleet

Every result below was achieved racing under IRC or ORC against fleets of 40 and 50-footers. No one-design advantage. Just a 31-foot boat winning on merit.

IRC European Championship — IRC One

200nm delivery from Cowes through the Channel. Race 1 — the double-points non-discardable coastal — Katabatic led IRC One against a fleet of 18 boats ranging from 40 to 50 feet. Cat 3 safety weight, North Sea chop, wind-over-tide killing the downwind legs. The conditions actively disadvantaged a 31-footer. The Ker 46 crew running in first didn’t care — they said publicly they were “most concerned about Lance Adams’ Cape 31 speedster Katabatic.” After racing: packed the boat, 24 knots back down the Channel, hitting 22 knots surfing through the night. Calais in 5.5 hours. South coast in sunshine.

Queen’s Cup + IRC Class 1 Overall

Katabatic K2 won IRC Class 1 on Day 1 to claim the Queen’s Cup — presented by Queen Victoria in 1897, awarded by the Royal Southampton Yacht Club to the IRC 1 winner. Four bullets across the week plus one OCS, still won IRC Class 1 overall by three points from Bullitt. The RSYC confirmed the result: “This cup will be presented to the winner of IRC1 — ‘Katabatic’ skippered by Lance Adams.” The crew had to race down from an event at the Royal Yacht Squadron and jump on stage in time to receive the cup.
